History of Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple
It is said that the idol was brought to Mawali in Mewar (Udaipur) from the Gujarat region. In the 17th century, Sawai Madho Singh Ji was visiting his in-law’s place in Mawali. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Ganesh.

He wished to bring Lord Ganesh’s idol to Jaipur and make a temple. On hearing this, Maharana of Mewar ordered Palliwal Brahman scholars to accompany him in a royal procession. And, take Lord Ganesh’s statue to Jaipur.

The bullock cart on arriving in Jaipur stopped at the foothills of Moti Dungri. After numerous attempts, none were able to move the cart. As a result, Madho Singh Ji ordered to the construction of the temple there only.
The construction of the temple was completed in four months in 1761 AD.

Interesting facts about Moti Dungri Temple
- The large icon of Lord Ganesha in the temple is vermilion colored.
- The idol trunk is right-sided which makes it very auspicious.
- The Moti Dungri fort complex is the private palace of Jaipur’s Royal Family. It was the residence of Sawai Man Singh ji, Maharani Gayatri Devi and Shri Jagat Singh ji.
- The priests of the temple live behind the temple complex.
It is said that the icon was over 500 years old when it was brought to Jaipur in 1761 AD. Henceforth, it is over 750 years old now.
The temple gets its name from the hill Moti Dungri. ‘Moti’ in Hindi means Pearl and ‘Dungri’ in Rajasthani means small hill. The hill looks like a pearl in the shell.
Thus, it is called Moti Dungri. The whole complex is spread over 2 kilometers area. The main temple is built just below Moti Dungri Fort. It is adjacent to another major tourist attraction in Jaipur; Birla Mandir.
The Ganesha Mandir is built of stone blocks and marble. The temple is on a little elevation from the road. The walls are beautifully inscribed with hundreds of names of Ganesh ji. A statue of a rat is also seated with the main statue as it is considered the ride of Ganesh Bhagwan.

Religious significance in Jaipur
