Story of Baba Khatu Shyam

After the event of Lakshagrah, Pandavas were wandering in the forests to save their lives. In one of the jungles, they met Hidimba the demoness. Bheema got married to Hidimba the demoness with the permission of Mother Kunti and they had an issue, Ghatotkach. Barbarik was the son of Ghatotkach who was mightier than his father himself.

During the Mahabharat War, Barbarik was headed to Kurukshetra to see the war. Lord Krishna knew if he sided with the Kauravas, the war would be lost. Lord Krishna visited him on the way in disguise as a Brahmin and asked who was he and where was he going. Barbarik answered all his questions to which Lord Krishna was impressed.

In order to stop Barbarik from participating in the war, Krishna asked him to donate his head to the poor Brahmin. Listening to the demand, Barbarik understood he wasn’t any normal Brahmin but some revered person. When Lord Krishna revealed his identity Barbarik chopped off his head and devoted it to Krishna.

After the Mahabharat, Lord Krishna blessed the Barbarik that he will be worshipped in the name of Shyam (Lord Krishna’s name). And whoever will worship Baba Shyam will be blessed with all the desires.
