What is Albert Hall – It is a building in Ramniwas Bagh of Jaipur. It serves as a State Museum of (Jaipur) Rajasthan.
Sawai Ram Singh ji wanted this building to be new town hall but his successor Sawai Madho Singh ll, on Dr. Thomas Holbein Hendley’s suggestion approved to open a museum of Industrial arts to display products of local artisans. Albert Hall State museum is administered by Department of Archaeology and Museums.
Where is Albert Hall?
It’s located in the heart of Jaipur, Ramniwas Bagh. It is just 100 meters away from Walled city of Jaipur just outside New Gate.

History of Albert Hall Jaipur
Prince of Wales visited Jaipur in 1876.
Albert Hall is named after Prince Albert of Wales.
The construction of Albert Hall began in 1876 AD under the reign of Sawai Ram Singh Bahadur. The constructed of building was completed in 1887 AD by Sawai Madho Singh ji ll. The museum was first opened for public in 1887 AD.
Major Samuel Swinton Jacob, a British Military Engineer is credited with being the chief designer. Major S.S. Jacob was assisted by Mir Tujumool Hoosein Chief Overseer, Lala Rambux, Shunkurlal, Chotelal Draughtsmen and Chander & Tara Mistries (Masons).

The assistant staff was sent to Mughal monuments of Delhi, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra. Though the general design was of Major Jacob, the detailed designs were of individual craftsmen and masons.
The outcome was an Indo–Saracenic building which is considered one of the most beautiful architectural buildings of India. The team involved British engineer, Indian artists and masons thus Albert Hall is a fusion of British, Mughal and Rajput Architecture.
It is estimated that Rs.510036 were spent on Albert Hall’s construction at that time.
Architecture of Jaipur Museum Albert Hall
The magnificent building is visible from outside New Gate. The building is made up of Stone blocks prominent in British Architecture of that time. The main building is on a a plinth to support weight of the huge building.
There are ‘Chatri’ on each side and on the centre of the building. The domes or Chatri are laid on the stone pillars which is the influence of Rajput architecture and Pillars, walls are decorated with beautiful carvings in Mughal Style.

Just inside the Building are courtyards with water fountains. And the floor is paved with polished, symmetric marble.

Another main attraction of Jaipur Museum is Egyptian Mummy which is fully conserved and showcased for tourists. Recently The Mummy was restored by an Egyptian Team.
How to Reach Albert Hall, Jaipur?
It’s located near walled city on the conjunction of JLN Marg and MI Road. It is very well connected to every part of town via buses, cabs, autos etc. Nearest Metro Station is Sindhi Camp Metro Station which is 4.2 kms away.
Timings: Albert Hall museum is open from 9 AM to 5 PM and night visiting hours are from 7 PM to 10 PM.
Note: Museum is closed for maintenance on every Monday (April to September) and every Tuesday (October to March) and on festival of Dhulandi (Holi).
